I’m a desert rat girl at the moment, so today’s post will be light. I did a peaceful 118-degree stay in Palm Springs, and then felt that magnetic calling to my favorite place, the high desert. Not just Joshua Tree, but way out in Landers. Where the hills literally have eyes. 110 degrees, rattlesnakes, roadrunners, skin chapping, eyes burning, and lungs wheezing from wildfire smoke. It’s heaven, I swear. Even though my fingers are too swollen from heat edema to even really type this. I think coming out to places with such dangerous isolation might be considered high-risk behavior, but there’s just something about driving 20 miles into the pitch darkness for a margarita and a bar steak. And, of course, to check in on friends at Pappy’s. A giant meteor flew right over me when I was walking back to my car. I’ve only seen about three that close, where you feel like you can actually hear it crackling. Every time it’s completely life-changing. Many more to come this month.
