Lebanon is home to over 150,000 migrant and domestic workers, mostly Asian and African, who work in the country under an exploitative system known as kafala, described many as a framework mirroring modern day slavery. Freshly abandoned by their employers, some with their passports withheld, wages stolen, often at times held against their will and subjected to physical abuse. A disenfranchised existence capped with the racism and classism they experience as aliens living in a mono-ethnic society. Just as African students fleeing the war in Ukraine were ripped from public trains and forced to walk miles to escape, African migrant workers in Lebanon are struggling to find safe shelter, solidarity, and escape as Israel’s bombs continue to rain down around them.
