Nelson Ramirez’s heavily pregnant wife Bevorlin Garcia Barrios arrived at Brooklyn’s Woodhull Hospital distressed, vomiting, and in pain. She was sent home. She came back three days later and was finally admitted. Shortly after an emergency C-Section, she was dead. At only 24, Barrios left behind her partner, 8 year old daughter, and newborn infant, and became the third black mother to die in that hospital since 2020.
The two earlier maternal deaths — one in July 2020, another in November 2023 — were a result of serious medical errors or lapses, according to hospital regulators, who detailed their findings in reports to the federal government. One doctor was fired, and another lost his medical license.
In New York City, more than 20 women typically die each year from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. The racial disparities are especially stark: Black women were nine times as likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth than white women from 2001 to 2019, according to city data. (NYT)
Like, Barrios, both Sha-Asia Semple and Christine Fields died during their emergency C-sections. Ramirez spoke better English than his wife, but says his ability to advocate for her was significantly hindered the hospital’s insistence on using their on-staff translator who may have watered down the severity of Barrios’ pleas.
